BIP responsivity phantoms

BIP Responsivity Phantoms are an essential tool for standardized optical performance assessment, ensuring accurate, reproducible, and cross-comparable measurements in time-domain biophotonics research, following the BIP protocol.

Category:

The BIP Responsivity Phantoms are specialized solid optical phantoms designed from the Basic Instrumental Performance (BIP) protocol, a standardized method for assessing the performance of time-domain (TD) optical brain imaging devices. Inspired by the nEUROPt project, this phantoms enable reliable quantification of system responsivity, ensuring the accuracy and reproducibility of diffuse optical imaging measurements.

For a diffuse optics instrument, responsivity is related to the capability of the system to detect light emerging from tissues, an essential characteristic to evaluate system performance, as required by the BIP protocol.

These phantoms are used to assess the efficiency of detecting low-light signals in biophotonics measurement systems, particularly in time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (TD-NIRS) and diffuse optical imaging.

Unlike general-purpose phantoms, BIP phantoms are not designed to mimic tissue optical properties. Instead, they serve as quantitatively characterized light sources, as they provide a known radiance source with Lambertian angular characteristics. Therefore, BIP phantoms are stable and reproducible references for measuring detection efficiency, instrument responsivity, and system calibration.

These products are an essential tool for research laboratories, medical device manufacturers, and clinical institutions aiming to ensure consistency and comparability of time-domain optical brain imaging systems.

BIP responsivity phantoms are NOT designed for X-ray, MRI, CT, or other non-optical imaging applications.
